Joe Martin Stage Race - May 7-10, 2009

In May of every year the quite little road of Arkansas Highway 170 is a bustle with bicyclists from around the world, participating in the Joe Martin Stage Race. The race begins downtown Fayetteville on the square . . . and comes up Rt. 170 from Rt. 156 - goes down by Devil's Den State Park and beautiful downtown Hogeye. As we were starting out for a ride Saturday evening, the last bunch of the racers were passing us . . . in the pouring down rain, poor guys/girls! Anyway, it's always great fun to stop while they pass, and listen to the "wind" the produce when they cycle by. Last year we were on our way to church early Saturday morning when the first round of racers passed us. We had to pull over to the side of the road, and creep down most of our mountain, stopping completely at times when they took up both lanes! It got us to church 20 minutes late, but what great fun to experience a race of this sort!!
