I haven't posted in a while, and I really apologize . . . not sure where time has gone since the first of the year!!??

Last Moday, January 26th, began the Mother of all Ice Storms in Northwest Arkansas. We had freezing rain that began early in the afternoon, and all schools let out early. Karl's work let out early . . . and caused a major traffic jam on I-540 just a few miles south . . . but we all made it home safe and sound by 3:30pm. We hauled in wood so that we would have dry wood available, and added to our pile on the front porch, and covered it with a tarp. Tuesday all schools were closed, and there was a nice sheet of ice on our road, and our driveway too. Tuesday it continued to rain all day, and we lost power in the late morning. Fortunately we had enough food to last us, and checked on mom, who had lost power too. Karl and Matt went over to haul wood inside for her . . . and they restacked her front porch with firewood.
I've got to say, Karl and Matthew really worked as a good team . . . Matt is so lucky to have my heart's desire as a good mentor and example for him. He listens well to instructions, and has learned an aweful lot about the right way to stack wood . . . you can tell I'm a girl, because I didn't know there was a wrong way! lol
We "pioneered it until Thursday at 2:30 PM . . . and grew a new appreciation for the pioneer women, as they started their first home without much of the nicities!!! I found that I didn't even have a manual can opener! Duh! OH, well . . . we really did do well. Now we've just been helping make sure mom's keeping warm, though she hasn't had any electricity yet. There are several branches down on the line that goes from her house to the street . . . and individuals won't get help until all the people on the main roads are done.
We are ever so grateful for the men and women who came from other electric companies. We heard tonight on the news tat a record 9,700 new electrical poles have had to be set up - and that 100,000 people were out of electricity, and they think another 40, 000 are still without. Again, we feel real blessed.
Here are a few pictures:
As beautiful as the pictures are, we hope no one has to go through this again any time soon! So glad you are all OK!! I think I want to take that little cardinal inside, he looks cold!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it funny the things we have. We had a the power go out one time and we did not have a phone that worked. We went and bought a corded phone that would work without the power. But now we are on an internet based phone service and not a land line. I guess we will keep those cell phones charged. Especially with our pending volcano!
Nicole, we have one phone that works without the electricity . . . and my car will charge our cell phones, and both were surely God-sends! We are praying about you volcano . . . geez, what other disasters are gonna happen? Do we need to worry about a plague or locusts??!? (ha ha)
