I'm in the DC suburbs, and the talk of the town on all the news this evening is the execution of the man who held the area hostage 7 years ago, by murdering and injuring people around the area, as a sniper. I remember hearing about these crimes from my parents, and how frightening and uncomfortable it felt whenever they had to go out, even to gas up the car. For gas stations provided prime targets for the Sniper. It was incredible how this man and his step-son were able to hold the entire area as "hostages", because the innocent bystanders did not know who or where the next victim would be.
So tonight the crime's mastermind and murderer was put to death by lethal injection. And his step-son who was forced to be his partner in crime sits in prison for the rest of his life. Which sentence truly is the worst of the two? Let's see, prison for 7 years and death (escape from the guilt) or prison for the rest of your life. It's a toss up, in my mind. I know all the sides to the arguments for capital punishment, but still think murder is murder.
It puts me in a somber mood . . . and helps me be grateful for this day of freedom that I have had . . . freedom to spend time with my parents . . . and time with Jonathan (23) . . . and even fit in a few games of Dominoes. (Jon whipped me).
Reminder to myself and my family and friends: reap all the good from every minute of every day . . . for you never know what tomorrow brings. And love . . . and live . . . like you were dying . . . absolutely, positively on purpose!
